I looked at the time What are the chances? I listened to the street To the sound of wheels turning As I lay on the ground I felt the earth shaking Still, the moon stood proud Looking on, waiting… That sums up the facts I step right up, then back So long to looking in Here comes the man As I sat there sleeping Right outside, these dogs started barking From the window the sky was bright red, like I’d not seen for a while So I covered my eyes And listened to the clock keeping time
2.
I lined up by everyone, and everyone was here And this kid looked over and said ‘you look like you could use a beer’ I said 'I’m stood here waiting on ‘the big idea’ He said ‘well, the devil’s in the detail and every light one day disappears’ Well, I don’t subscribe to these kinds of lines And I’m not afraid of being clear He said ‘this is real now, and you’ve got to hang on, Because nothing’s gonna come easy for you man, if you keep on burying your head in the sand’ I woke up hung over and walked downstairs like the living dead And the house lay empty, no kids anymore in their beds Outside the sky grew darker and rain fell thick and red It looked like my hands were bleeding He said ‘its all in your head’ Well, I don’t subscribe to these kids of lines And I’m not afraid of being clear He said ‘this is real now, and you’ve got to hang on, Because nothing’s gonna come easy for you man, if you keep on burying your head in the sand’

The sky turned a pale green With light set inbetween And the sound of feet Was the sound of arrival I saw a light flicker on Too bright so I moved along And took a ride beyond Far behind them You see the further you ride from here The clearer the sky And the fear disappears into a simpler horizon So I tripped the wire The night drew sleep So I made this pact, to keep As the threat of rain took aim at the rooftops The ground felt rough to touch A mix of iron and rust And through the air came the sound of an engine You see the further you ride from here The clearer the sky And the fear disappears into a simpler horizon
4.
Free Ride 04:44
A rule fell in the rough It’s there to follow, it’s there to lead, so I read A cruel wind came from the winter She’d been hidden in the leaves, hidden through the spring And she said ‘meet me in the morning, I’ll be making a run’ Cos it’s a free ride And I aint here to watch So you decide I say it’s clear enough Old friend, how did we lose touch? Guess everybody steals, and everybody runs And everybody moves on Cos it’s a free ride And I aint here to watch So you decide I say it’s clear enough

A Rare Heat 04:02
A rare heat led mist to rise Clear labelled Moving along I was… The sun heaped praise on you alone So I step back And run like a wolf (You said that nothing was… …that nothing comes easy) The fear The heat Says no-one’s the wiser now A short breeze took a deeper sigh As red shanks made circles into the sky And in that moment I came alive Mind focussed Eyes set fever bright So I step back And run like a wolf (You said that nothing was… …that nothing comes easy)
7.
I couldn’t be sure if it was the clouds or the moon that was moving I couldn’t be sure if it was me or the kids free falling And I couldn’t really see what type of question that people were asking of me And I couldn’t really feel anything, but the wind asking Why don’t you let me in? I’ll move you on I’ll guide you out Out of reach From what I’ve learned You aint burned, underneath I couldn’t be sure if I was looking for an answer So I dug out a spark from the earth and held it up higher Then over my head the clouds formed a shape of a place I once remembered And the sun found a gap to a stage where I once surrendered So wild wind, you can let me in And move me on And guide me out Out of reach
8.
I look up And the sun beats down The heat came thick And it folded around If you walk a while Into the wild It’s about ten miles as the crow flies Where the channel splits And the river lifts Out above the tide line You’ll see me at the widest stretch Where the weather closes in And there’s nobody else I came round To the feeling of rain on my face And here’s the trick… …it left no trace So I took a walk for a while Into the wild It’s about ten miles as the crow flies Where the channel splits And the river lifts Out above the tide line You’ll see me at the widest stretch Where the weather closes in And there’s nobody else

about

This is the follow up to 2017's 'Hang on the Word' and my sixth album to date. This has been a while in the making. I've been through so many songs, so many ideas and a lot has gone on at home but I think finally this is something I am reasonably happy to release. One of the things I've enjoyed a lot about this album is playing the violin. The last album was quite sparse on that front and sitting in my house just playing and coming up with these violin lines has brought me a lot of happiness. Lyrically, I have managed to avoid a lot of my previous naval gazing. I guess the interesting thing as you get older (I'm 42 now) is that you tend to get better at playing your instruments, writing songs and writing lyrics. When I look back at the albums I have released to date and all the touring I have done, all the places I have played, the radio sessions, music in films and shows and so on, I am pretty chuffed with that but frustrated by the musical output. I think that the best stuff is yet to come. So, whilst I can't come and do gigs and see you all for a while I might sit down and see if an album 7 feels like making an appearance. In the meantime, "I'm going take a walk for a while, into the wild. It’s about ten miles as the crow flies. Where the channel splits, and the river lifts...out above the tide line".
